I was 10 years old in the spring of 1985. My parents were house hunting in a city that was to become our home, and a friend was looking after us for a few days. I still remember it, my sister, brother, and I riding in the backseat of her BMW, me behind the driver’s seat, the Louis Vuitton Speedy at my feet.

I have a fabulous friend. She is fabulous in every way, beautiful, stylish, confident, generous, and ebullient. At 65 she charms and delights everyone she meets – and men of all ages, from the legendary Quincy Jones who flirted with her in an inky jazz bar at the Montreux Jazz Festival in Switzerland to the twenty-something server while we lunched outside, where it was cooler than inside, during a sweltering heat wave.
