How to Dress for a Conference: A Capsule Guide to Casual Executive Presence

How will you show up to the networking event, the keynote, the board meeting, the workshop?

Over the course of my career, I have long lost count of the number of conferences I have attended. It seems every industry has them whether for product launches, industry updates, continuing education, networking, or fundraising. Over the course of my 28-year career (wow, has it really been that long?) I have attended at least twice that many conferences, and likely more, most of them identified by over-airconditioned hotels, keynotes, bad coffee, breakouts, long walks to the ballrooms, workshops, and – for this introvert who thrives on deep conversations – the dreaded networking session on the patio amongst the high-boy tables with passed hors d’oeuvres that I always decline if they are going to require more than one bite (love meeting the people, hate the small talk and the awkward drink, food, napkin cocktail shuffle).

Only a mere two conferences stand distinctive in my memory. The first was The Women’s Conference which was historically a small initiative of the Governor of California but under the vision craft of Maria Shriver as California’s first lady became a metamorphosis all its own. I had the privilege of attending twice and it was truly transformative as I listened to keynote sessions like a conversation with Sandra Day O’Connor and Ruth Bader Ginsberg discussing the early stages their careers, courage, partnership, and marriage, or Katie Couric recalling how the mentorship of the late journalist Tim Russert empowered her early career. It was at The Women’s Conference I saw strength and vulnerability held together to equal magnificence, and authentic expressions of power, passion, gratitude, and grief embodied. And as I look back, I think in many ways it defined for me what it means to be woman. Then years later at a tender and redefining time in my life, as a member of YPO I had the experience of attending a Business Outside conference, led by Bart Foster. Far from the confines of frigid hotel ballrooms and conference-room buffet lunches, we hiked, were led in meaningful guided conversations, plunged together into the chilly waters of Boulder Creek after an early morning breathing session, and picnicked while also learning from accomplished entrepreneurs, thought-leaders, and trailblazers.

If a conference is where you’re headed this summer, I hope it will be something you will take with you for years to come. Of course, you can’t know beforehand if or how life-changing it will be, but what you can plan for is how you will show up. And to be sure how you dress isn’t the only answer to that question, but what you wear shouldn’t just look a part—it should feel like you. It’s not just about style. It’s about presence – your presence.

So how do you strike that perfect blend of polish, grounded femininity, and effortless confidence? I recently did a style consultation for a woman in leadership, an agency vice-president, attending a conference hosted by her client and curated this approach to dressing for a casual executive presence.

1. Embrace the Capsule: Build Around Neutrals

Start with a classic base of neutral pieces—think a structured blazer, tailored trouser, or elegant dress in navy, cream, or taupe.

Pro tip: Choose investment pieces (like a well-cut blazer or trench) in these core colors. Then, rotate in current seasonal shades—like butter, blue, or a pop of red—for your blouses, knits, shoes or bags

2. Make Pieces Work Overtime

The key to conference dressing: Layering and versatility.

  • Blazer: Pair it with trousers on Day 1, toss over a dress or skirt on Day 2, and wear it with jeans for last 1/2 day and travel home.
  • Sweater or cardigan: Tie it over your shoulders for a fresh take, wear it over a white tee, use it as a wrap in chilly breakout rooms, or around the waist of a skirt for a casual “street-style” vibe
  • Trench or car coat: The ultimate chameleon—it adds sophistication to every look and handles unpredictable cool temperatures with ease.

3. Style with Casual Executive Presence in Mind

For a modern, grounded, approachably confident presence

Incorporate seasonal trends subtly so you’re wearing them not the other way around—like a collarless blazer (sometimes called the “lady jacket”), a peplum-detail blouse, or kitten heel slingbacks.

4. Let Your Shoes Shift the Mood

Want to relax a structured outfit? Swap in a sleek sneaker, boot or this season’s loafer trend.

Want to elevate jeans and a tee? Step into block-heel or kitten slingbacks.
This flexibility lets you re-wear the same foundation in fresh ways across multiple days.

5. Remember: You Are the Brand

Your wardrobe is your language. When it aligns with your values, your story, and your evolving season of leadership—it becomes a tool for transformation – no matter what conference you’re attending.
